Borrowed Light

Borrowed light: the sun’s colours, gathered from many places into one room, moment by moment.

The sun doesn’t change, what it feels like to stand in it does.

Small sensors on rooftops in different parts of the world read the colour of the daylight above them, live. That is the whole mechanism.

Alone, each colour is almost nothing, your eye quietly edits it away. Together, their differences make each one visible, and to stand in that light is to stand, a little, where it came from. Whether that light can shift your mood, whether one sun landing differently across the world can be felt as well as seen: that is not a question this work answers. It is the question it puts to you, by letting you stand inside it.

A work in progress. One sensor is reading a London sky now; others will follow, elsewhere. What form the standing-inside finally takes, whether light, projection, or something else, is still open, and part of the work.
